Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, seeking re-election later this year, used her third State of the Commonwealth Address to focus on issues of affordability.
In proclaiming the state of the Commonwealth as strong, the governor proposed a list of initiatives lowering costs for all state residents. Housing was at the top of that list. Governor Healey said permitting has been streamlined, and the state seeks to use vacant state-owned buildings as additional housing units. Along with advancing the construction of accessory dwelling units (ADUs), the governor is also proposing additional help for families seeking to purchase their first home.
The governor is dedicated to lowering energy costs for residents. She plans to increase energy supply while blocking any rate increases from utilities.
The governor recognized Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon for his department’s work in saving lives during last summer’s Gabriel House fire, pledging added support for local and state public safety. She also addressed plans to reduce the cost of healthcare while investing in education, veterans, and small businesses.
Governor Healey also used her speech to attack President Trump for his immigration enforcement tactics and cuts to healthcare and food benefits.
Responding to the address, Seventh Bristol State Representative Alan Silvia said he is pleased with the governor’s commitment to building more housing and lowering the cost of utilities. But he is disappointed that the state is not working harder to reasonably cooperate with the federal government.
