The City of Fall River has established a special revenue account to collect funds from the state to be used locally to combat the impact of opioids in the city.

The state has received $533 million dollars in settlements from four pharmaceutical companies for their role in contributing to the opioid epidemic. Over the next 15 years, Fall River will receive $4.4 million which will be distributed toward treatment and recovery.

Mayor Paul Coogan says the city’s health department will lead the effort to distribute the funds.

The city has received over $931,000 to seed the revenue account. It will receive annual payments of between $161,000 to $277,000 through July of 2038.
