Check Out A Self Guided Tour of The USS Massachusetts

Battleship Cove is now offering four new self-guided tours on the USS Massachusetts for the first time this season. The World War II battleship is 683 feet long, and is anchored on the city’s waterfront.

The new addition means that tourists and visitors will be greeted by a life-sized cutout of Seaman Second Class Walter D. Peterson followed by other life-sized crew members posted around the deck and inside the ship. A five-minute video runs continuously inside, including recordings of crew members talking about their time aboard the ship. Photographs, letters and souvenirs are also scattered around the tour route.

Many of the original crewmembers – 18 or 19 years old at the time – have since died, and the idea of the self guided tour is to bring them ‘back to life.”

In an effort to keep their memories alive, officials at Battleship Cove had asked family members to donate pictures, letters, or anything else to put on display.  Some families sent in entire scrapbooks complied by husbands and fathers of the military service members.
