The Fall River Board of Elections Office is gearing up to begin mailing the city’s annual census survey to some 65 thousand households. Board of Elections Chair Kelly Souza-Young told FRC Media News today, she hopes to get the city census out by mid-March, which is earlier than the required April 1st deadline.

“The mailing will depend on whether the required signatures to get the process underway are submitted to my office in the near future,” Sousa-Young explains. “We are currently waiting for the necessary paperwork to be officially approved by city administrators, including the mayor, so the vendor can provide the paper census sheets to us.”

Unfortunately, not every resident returns the census as it relates to his or her household as is required by state law. According to Sousa-Young, state and federal programs use census statistics as a fair way to distribute funds for health, education, senior citizen needs, veterans’ benefits, infrastructure, job training, school lunch programs, and other services.

“The more residents who provide the basic census survey information to us, the more likely the city is eligible to receive its fair share of the funding necessary for the services and programs just mentioned.”

The cost to getting the city census out to households is approximately $30 thousand dollars, with around $23 thousand used primarily for postage, according to Souza-Young, who urges all residents to take the time to fill out the census as soon as they receive the packet in the mail.
