King Philips Mill Update

The King Philip Mill Complex considered one of the worst public safety sites in Fall River, is back in the news. According to State Representative Alan Silvia who also serves as the President of the Southend Neighborhood Association, eight bids were submitted to take down a portion of the massive mill complex, leaving one main structure intact. There’s also an alternative bid request to demolish all the buildings.

Silvia tells FRC Media News, the bids ranged from $1.7 million dollars for the partial demoliton to as high as $6.1 million for a total tear-down.

After the bids were reviewed the Correia administration – the city owns the complex – S & R Corporation of Lowell came in with the lowest numbers with the $1.7 million price tag for the partial demolition, and $2.5 million if the administration chooses a full demolition. The next step in the process is for the administration to review the contract and confirm the company’s references.

“The longer the process goes on, the more money the abandoned mill complex is costing the city,” Siliva says. “I still would like to still like to see mixed use for the site, so that there is access to Cook pond – which there has never been – and multi-family housing units.”

The complex on Kilburn Street was ravaged by fire a few years ago, and now is abandoned, an eye sore, and a public safety issue for southend residents.
