BOSTON, MA January 25, 2022 — Local unemployment rates dropped in twenty-three labor market areas and increased in one labor market area in the state during the month of December, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported.

Compared to December 2020, the rates were down in twenty-four labor market areas.

Eight metropolitan areas for which job estimates are published experienced gains over the month, in December 2021. The largest percentage increases occurred in Lowell-Billerica-Chelmsford (+0.7%), Leominster-Gardner (+0.6%), and Worcester (+0.5%) areas. New Bedford and Taunton-Middleborough-Norton areas saw the largest percentage declines in jobs at the end of the year—a 0.9% and 0.8% decline over the month, respectively.

From December 2020 to December 2021, all fifteen areas gained jobs with the largest percentage increases seen in Leominster-Gardner (+7.5%), Boston-Cambridge-Newton (+6.8%) and Brockton-Bridgewater-Easton (+6.5%) areas.

In order to compare the statewide rate to local unemployment rates, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the statewide-unadjusted unemployment rate for December was 3.5 percent, down 1.1 percentage points from November.

Last week, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported the statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the month of December was 3.9 percent, down 1.3 percentage points from the revised November estimate of 5.2 percent.

The statewide seasonally adjusted jobs estimate showed an increase of 20,100 jobs in December, and an over-the-year gain of 222,200 jobs.

The unadjusted unemployment rates and job estimates for the labor market areas reflect seasonal fluctuations and therefore may show different levels and trends than the statewide seasonally adjusted estimates.

The estimates for labor force, unemployment rates and jobs for Massachusetts are based on different statistical methodology specified by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
