April is Child Abuse Prevention and Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Mayor Paul Coogan recognized the efforts of organizations such as the Children’s Advocacy Center and The Women’s Center that use this time of year to focus on the message of prevention.

Lara Stone is the co-executive director at the Children’s Advocacy Center. She says her organization receives between 600 to 800 referrals a year of child abuse. She says her team works with schools, pediatricians and local law enforcement to educate them on recognizing the early warning signs of abuse.

The Women’s Center executive director Kristin Batstone says her organization’s prevention efforts often start at a young age.
