A mild winter so far has helped move the William Canning Boulevard Project forward more quickly than anticipated. That today from Fall River’s Department of Community Utilities Director Paul Ferland.
“To date approximately 70 percent of the underground water drainage project has been completed between William Canning Boulevard and Tucker Street near Southcoast Marketplace,” Ferland said. “While traffic detours and delays are still occurring in that area, the entire project should be completed by mid-summer.”
In addition to the drainage work, improvements to the stretch of sidewalks in that area, and traffic signalization improvements at the corner of Newton Street and William Canning Blvd. are also in the works.
Ferland says his office is working in conjunction with City Engineer JR Frey to get the work completed on schedule. While approximate figures for the entire project was not readily available when we spoke to Ferland today, he did share that the signalization improvement project alone will cost upwards of $250 thousand dollars.
When asked why so costly, Ferland explained that advanced technology that uses camera installation to monitor traffic at intersections is now the norm and more costly than less advanced underground methods used in the past.
