The City of Fall River yesterday raised the flags of five Latin American countries outside Government Center to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month.
Represented during the flag-raising were the countries of Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Mexico, Brazil and the Dominican Republic, the five largest Latin American populations in the City of Fall River. During a brief speaking ceremony, Karina Valencia spoke of how Mexicans were rarely portrayed accurately in history classes. She soon found out from family members the contributions made by the Latino community in the United States.
Also part of the festivities was Bristol Community College, which is hosting a number of Hispanic Heritage Month activities and is home to one of the area’s successful English as a Second language program. Coordinator Livia Nerbuert shared her story of educational perseverance since coming to America from Brazil and says anyone, regardless of language barriers, can succeed in America if afforded an education.
