Third-grade students at the Atlantis Charter School today helped a local World War II veteran prepare to celebrate his 102nd birthday.
Joe Bucko told family and friends that all he wanted for his 102nd birthday was to receive birthday cards. Atlantis Charter School third-grade teacher Grace Nunes saw a news story about Mr. Bucko’s request and encouraged her class to take part in fulfilling Mr. Bucko’s wishes. She soon found out that a third-grader in another class has related to Mr. Bucko.
Three classes of third graders assembled outside the school holding signs during a drive-by to wish Mr. Bucko happy birthday. Mr. Bucko, who will officially celebrate his birthday next Sunday, was overjoyed by the response and reflected upon his longevity.
Ms. Nunes used the event to teach students about the history of the early 20th century when Mr. Buck served for four years during World War II in Europe.
