The Coogan administration this week updated the city council on plans to sell the Bank Street Armory.
City Administrator Seth Aitken told councilors a study in 2015 placed the cost to repair the historic armory at nearly $8 million, $10-$12 million dollars based on inflation today. Work on a chimney on a lower roof has been completed.
Earlier this year the city put out a request for proposals to sell the armory. Local developer Alan Macomber was the lone bidder of the project, looking to convert the space into housing. Mr. Aitken says that even though restoring the armory to its past glory is admirable, it would be too cost prohibitive for the city to undertake.
Councilor Linda Pereira thinks preserving the armory for community use should still be a priority.
