The Fall River School Committee has voted to move ahead with a process to hire a new superintendent of schools to replace outgoing Superintendent Maria Pontes.
The committee is enlisting the services of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees which has expertise in conducting searches for new superintendents. It is unclear how much the search will cost the district and whether a replacement will be in place when Superintendent Pontes retires on June 30.
Even though the process is in its early stages, members are offering opinions on what type of candidate they would like to see assume the position. Member Kevin Aguiar feels the transition from former embattled superintendent Matthew Malone was handled well by Ms. Pontes, but looking to the future, he would like to see a fresh face in charge.
Member Tom Khoury says experience within the district is important, but the committee should allow the search process to play out.
