It’s official!

After months of waiting, Fall River Mayor Sam Sutter has announced the city has been awarded a $2 million dollar safer grant which will allow the hiring of 10 additional firefighters.

Mayor Sutter is pleased with the award amount, and President of the Firefighters union, local IAFF L-1314 Jason Burns is thrilled with the new development.

On local radio and television news over the last eight months, debate over whether the city should apply for the SAFER grant has caused much debate, with some saying the grant is simply a “band-aid” remedy, while others insist the money is necessary to ensure public safety.

After meeting with union members and discussing the pros and cons of how a SAFER grant would impact the future employment concerning fire fighters when it runs out, Mayor Sutter decided to apply for the money back in February.

Word of the award came swiftly, and the mayor has yet to meet with Mr. Burns to fully discuss the impact the funding will have on the operation of the city’s fire department.
