The Power Boat Races are coming to the Taunton River this weekend.
Traffic is expected to be heavy, so in order to ensure drivers get a parking place near the city’s waterfront, Mayor Sam Sutter put this plan in place:
Parking garages on Pearl St. and Third St. will both be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
Charge to park: $5 dollars per vehicle per day.
Visitors can also park in the lots of BMC Durfee High School and Bristol Community College on Elsbree St., where buses will be providing shuttles from the schools to the waterfront and back for free. The buses will be operating all day Saturday and Sunday.
The best locations to view the races will probably be very crowded, so the patio area outside Kuss Middle School will be opened for spectators. From there, spectators will be able to see the area between the start/finish line and the Braga Bridge very well.
After the boats complete their test runs on Saturday, the public will be able to view the boats up close in the “pits” located at the Borden Light Marina. Fall River Police will be providing security in the area throughout the weekend.
There will still be access to the Taunton River for boaters interested in getting out on the water. The Bicentennial Park public boat ramp will be open as usual and will not be affected by the race, as the northbound powerboats will be turning around south of the ramp.
