Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll and Secretary of Education Patrick Tutwiler yesterday met with Fall River public education leaders at Durfee High School before touring the after-school programs offered by the Boys & Girls Club in Fall River.
The Healey Administration was in the city to promote the Literacy Launch initiative, which supports early literacy education for children ages 3 through Grade 3. The governor met with Mayor Paul Coogan, Superintendent Maria Ponts and other local school leaders on how Fall River children can benefit from the planned expansion of early education opportunities.
The governor said her administration is working on improving pathways and lowering barriers for new educators to be trained and placed in local schools working with youth.
She said after-school programs like those at the Boys & Girls Club are vital in ensuring kids become well-rounded and productive citizens.
