A joint meeting of the city council and school committee was held last night where the city gave the first overview of its FY 2023 budget.
The joint meeting is held annually, as dictated by the city charter, to provide a status update of the financial standing of the city as it prepares its next annual budget. The administration is currently working on a spending plan likely to be over $370 million dollars, a nearly seven percent increase over FY 2022. The bulk of the increase is a result of additional state revenue received for city schools. Mayor Paul Coogan says the budget being finalized will include the use of the American Rescue Plan Act money received in response to the pandemic. A portion of that money will offset the amount taxpayers will be asked to spend next year for the construction of the new BMC Durfee High School.
The school department is proposing a budget totaling nearly $205 million. The mayor’s final budget proposal will be sent to the city council for approval early next month.
