In an effort to hear what young people want in order to improve their lives in Fall River, the city’s Recreation Department is holding a Youth Violence Prevention Program October 20th.
Ms. Anne Marie Holly is the Youth Leadership Services Coordinator. She says that a panel of eight young people, aged thirteen to twenty two, will be on a panel in front of an audience made up of political candidates in the upcoming November 3rd preliminary election.
“We invited every candidate running for mayor, city council, and school committee to attend,” Ms. Holly says. “The purpose is for each panel member to recant the story of their lives, including the challenges they face, and what they did to overcome their roadblocks so they can be considered productive citizens.”
After the brief stories are told, the candidates will get a chance to ask what they could do if elected, that would help the youth stay on a healthy and productive life track.
“The candidates will write questions, and because of lack of time, only a few of them will be asked,” Ms. Holly says, stressing that the event is not a political forum.
“We are hoping that once the participants tell their stories, that the candidates will pledge to support an area of but rather one that hopefully will help candidates become aware of the needs of the city’s youth.
