Fall River students will be hoofing it to school on Wednesday, October 7th as part of International Walk to School Day.
Parent Michelle Dumais has two sons at the Tansey Elementary School. She plans to walk with 6 year old Schuyler and 8 year old CJ from the top of North Park to the school on Ray Street after gathering with other parents and children around 8 a.m.
“It’s about a fifteen minute walk,” Ms. Dumais tells frcconnect.org. “I think it’s something different, and gets the kids moving in the morning, plus it allows me to spend some extra time with my boys.”
Ms. Dumais has been participating in the walk since CJ was in kindergarten four years ago.
“Not only is the exercise good for the students,” she says with a laugh, “but it’s good for the parents as well.”
International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record breaking participation – each October. Today, thousands of schools across America – from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico – participate every October.
