As we reported earlier this week, the mayor’s race may be the only contest in this year’s City Election that would require a preliminary vote. Why aren’t more residents willing to run for office in Fall River?
Former Fall River Mayor John Mitchell believes one reason is the increased commitment needed to run for office.
The former mayor says the need to secure more certified signatures to be placed on a ballot with the change in the city’s charter should not be a barrier to run. He says another reason for a lack of candidates is the increased scrutiny they face, particularly through social media.
In the race for mayor likely pitting Mayor Paul Coogan against City Council President Cliff Ponte, former Mayor Mitchell says each man brings a unique skill set to the campaign.
The preliminary election will be held on September 21 with the city election slated for November 2.
