Members of the Fall River City Council are reacting to the news yesterday that Councilor Pam Laliberte resigned her position as president as she deals with harassment and witness intimidation charges against her.
Councilor Laliberte resigned as president prior to last night’s regularly scheduled meeting. She did not resign as a councilor but did not attend the meeting.
At its next meeting in two weeks, the council will elect a new president. Council Vice President Michelle Dionne, who chaired yesterday’s meeting, is not interested in the job. Councilors Joe Camara and Shawn Cadime, both former presidents, have expressed interest in returning.
The charges against Councilor Laliberte stem from a complaint by a Westport woman who had been receiving harassing and annoying calls and text messages. Police were able to trace the messages to councilor Laliberte’s phone. Allegedly Councilor Laliberte had been in a relationship with the woman’s husband. She is also accused of intimidation in trying to interfere with a police investigation. She is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges next month.
