The city council’s Committee on Ordinances and Legislation this week moved forward with the city’s plan to raise water and sewer rates for the new fiscal year that begins in July.
Under the proposal, sewer rates will rise by $.31 per CCH and water by $.20 per CCF. The city is also hiking, by $12 a year, the stormwater fee. The average homeowner is expected to see a yearly increase of just under $32 a year.
Committee chair Councilor Shawn Cadime supported the increase, saying the city could do more to reduce the burden on ratepayers, but the high cost of supplies and projected salary increases makes rejecting the plan difficult.
Of the four members of the committee on hand, only Councilor Michelle Dionne voted against the rate hikes…Citing the city should have done more to direct covid federal money to pay for the cost of water and sewer projects.
The full city council still needs to approve the rate increases along with a water and sewer department budget before the new rates were to go into effect.
