The City of Fall River last week remembered victims of domestic violence at a ceremony recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month held outside Government Center.
The event was co-sponsored by the Greater Fall River Domestic Violence Coalition which is made up of local service organizations and advocates that support victims and promote greater awareness of not remaining silent in the face of abuse.
Jennifer Dias was the keynote speaker at the event. She lost her sister Jessica at the hands of her fiance 18 years ago.
Ms. Dias says Jessica’s story is one that should be a reminder for all not to remain silent and be aware of potential signs of abuse.
In conjunction with the awareness event, Government Center is hosting the Clothesline Project, a visual display of shirts to represent domestic violence statistics. Each shirt is made by a survivor of violence or by someone who has lost a loved one to violence. The display will be available for viewing throughout the entire month of October.
