St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in the city’s south end is in need of repairs and is asking the city and the community at large for support.
Representatives of the church appeared before the city’s Community Preservation Committee this week seeking $58,000 in financial support for the structure on Center Street.
The project was spearheaded by trustee Ihor Slabicky who says the history of the church dates back to when Ukrainian immigrants arrived in Fall River.
The scope of work on the project will be focused on the outside of the structure.
The church has a very small, but dedicated congregation that will be working with residents in the neighborhood and the broader community to raise additional funds. A GoFundMe page has been established for online donations.
Trustee Tom Walmsley says growing the congregation in the Eastern Rites Catholic Church goes hand in hand with any cosmetic improvements to the building.
The church is also seeking other grant opportunities to secure funding for the project. Mr. Slabicky says the church is unique to the region and it’s important that its future be secured.
The Community Preservation Committee will render a decision on the church’s application later this spring.
