The new B.M.C. Durfee High School has been open for a week but traffic congestion along Elsbree Street and President Avenue has had a negative impact on local businesses and residents each morning and mid-afternoon.
During this week’s city council meeting, Arthur Allard, manager at Ferris Reality which oversees the businesses at the CVS Plaza on President Avenue, said the congestion, combined with rude students and parents, has made the plaza unsafe for workers and patrons.
The school committee was updated on the traffic problems at Durfee earlier this week, with school officials stating increased police presence will continue at the school for the foreseeable future. As an alternative, parents can drop off children in the lot of the old school on Ray Street with students walking along the old school behind Spencer Borden Elementary to the new facility. That option will be short-lived when demolition of the old school begins in a few weeks.
Officials are working on plans for alternative drop-off sites that would lessen traffic on Elsbree Street.
