School Superintendent Dr. Matthew Malone last night gave the Fall River School Committee a progress report on operations thus far in the 2020-2021 school year.
One month since schools began under a hybrid model of remote and in-person learning, the superintendent provided a breakdown of how the 10,068 students in the district are separated into the four learning cohorts.
Dr. Malone says under current safety protocols, the district is able to accept more students back into the classroom from those facing struggles learning exclusively remote. He says schools are considering those requests on a case-by-case basis, keeping an eye on a recent uptick in COVID-positive cases.
Dr. Malone says the total of 10,068 students represents a drop of 228 students over last year. He says that could negatively impact the school system when the state calculates local funding for education for FY 2022.
The superintendent also says that the district has enough laptops on hand to outfit every student in the event the district is forced to once again return to a fully remote learning environment if the pandemic worsens.
