Representatives of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MASSDOT) updated city residents this week on the progress of reconstructing Rte. 79.
Last month the Rte. 79 freeway was closed to traffic as demolition work commenced. Traffic was diverted along Davol Street and passthrough traffic was diverted to Rte. 24.
Project Design Manager Jonathan Kapust says over the next month demolition work will begin on the overpass at President Avenue and traffic patterns will be altered.
As more and more traffic becomes impacted by construction, plans are to alter traffic signals to better direct vehicles.
The construction project, which will open space to connect the city with the waterfront, is slated for completion in 2026.
