The Southeastern Regional Transit Authority (SRTA) has received federal and state funding to purchase new hybrid buses over the next four fiscal years.
SRTA Administrator Erik Rousseau says a $12.2 million dollar federal grant will be a significant step toward the transit authority becoming more environmentally friendly.
Mr. Rousseau says an accompanying state grant will allow for the purchase of six additional buses, for a total of 24 to be purchased. That means to a third of the transit authority’s fleet of 74 buses will be hybrid. Even though there have been advancements made in electric vehicle technology, the prospect of SRTA going fully electric is not in its short-term plans.
Will there be a demand for these new buses? Mr. Rousseau says SRTA has seen a resurgence in riders since COVID restrictions were loosened last year.
