Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan yesterday awarded 49 local small businesses grants funded by the American Rescue Plan Act to continue their recovery from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The grants were in the amounts of $2,500 or $5,000 to businesses with 10 or fewer employees.
Among those receiving assistance is At Your Service, a limousine, car and courier company operating in Fall River for 22 years. Owner Harvey Trieff says when travel shut down, so did his business.
Dr. Rajiv Nehra of Fall River Spine & Disc Center initially thought he would need to shut down his 20-year-old business for two weeks at the onset of the pandemic. That shutdown lasted three months. When he re-opened, COVID restrictions limited the number of patients he could see. He is grateful for the financial support and now all of his eight employees are back on the job.
Over $157,000 was distriubuted during this first allocation of funds. Over $3 million dollars remain for the nearly 2,000 Fall River small businesses that could benefit from the program.
