The Fall River City Council last night put on hold a second request by the Coogan Administration to sell the Bank Street Armory to a local developer looking to convert the historic building into a mix of market rate and affordable housing.
The council voted 4-3 last month to sell the armory to developer Alan Macomber. The measure did not move forward as six votes were needed for passage. At that last meeting, councilors Leo Pelletier and Pam Laliberte were not in attendance.
At last night’s meeting Councilor Michelle Dionne argued that because the sale failed to get the requisite number of votes last meeting, the matter is not properly before the council.
Councilor Pelletier was at last night’s meeting and said the property should be sold to Mr. Macomber so that it can be revived, even though for a new use.
Some councilors and many residents have spoken out against the sale, pleading for the city to save the historic structure for use by residents and veterans. In the end Councilor Linda Pereira objected to the vote, putting an end to discussion until the next council meeting later this month.
