The Fall River School Committee last night voted to rename the former Fall River Technical High School on Rock Street the Robert L. Medeiros Resilience Preparatory Academy after its longtime custodian.
Mr. Medeiros served as a custodian for the City of Fall River for over 35 years and passed away a year ago after a long battle with cancer.
Former co-workers and community members were on hand at last night’s meeting to urge the committee to support the renaming of the school. Brenda Souza was a family friend of Mr. Medeiros and worked with him at RPA for many years. She reflected upon his dedication to his job, always keeping a bright disposition and treating all with respect. She said naming the school after him will be historically symbolic.
The committee voted 6-1 to approve the renaming of the school. Committee member Kevin Aguiar cast the lone no vote. He agreed to Mr. Medeiros deserving recognition but cautioned against setting a new standard for how schools and buildings are named.
