U.S. District Court Judge Douglas Woodlock today sentenced former Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia to serve six years in prison for his convictions on extortion and conspiracy charges this past spring.
Following his incarceration, Correia will also face three years of supervised probation. He was ordered to pay a $1,300 fine with restitution and forfeiture sentences to be determined as early as tomorrow.
Prior to sentencing Judge Woodlock called Correia’s convictions on extorting bribes from prospective recreational marijuana vendors “the most corrosive crime a community faces.”
Woodlock went on to excoriate Correia for his lack of remorse and continuing to commit crimes when, during his time as mayor, he was under federal investigation of defrauding investors of his SnoOwl app business.
“This crime is as cruel as anything imaginable,” Woodlock said.
Correia will not be sent to prison immediately. A date to self-report will be determined, and Judge Woodlock expects the process of the location from the federal prison to take about eight weeks.
Yesterday Judge Woodlock threw out eight of the wire and tax fraud convictions against Correia.
Here is our sentencing with Attorney Steven Sabra of Sabra & Aspden:
