The first debate in the race for mayor took place last night, hosted by the Fall River Reporter and aired on FRCMedia.
All four candidates were invited to attend with incumbent Mayor Paul Coogan, City Council President Cliff Ponte, and challenger Jonathan Albernaz in attendance. Here are the candidates’ full responses to the question of their top two priorities if elected.
Public safety has long been a concern of voters. The candidates had differing views on how best to curb crime.
Other topics addressed by the candidates included curbing the opioid epidemic, controlling rents, encouraging job growth and improving public education.
When it came to city finances Councilor Ponte used the opportunity to accuse the mayor of not planning appropriately, particularly when it comes to using one-time funds in the budget and paying for the construction of the new Durfee High School. The mayor rejected those claims while Mr. Albernaz called to limit any tax and fee increases.
You can watch a replay of the debate at various times on FRCMedia channel 95 between now the preliminary election, September 21. You can also view the debate on demand along with learning more about the candidates on our special webpage frmedia.org/election2021.
