Next week city residents will begin to see a significant traffic impact related to the reconstruction of Rte. 79.
On Monday the high-speed expressway of Rte. 79 between Heritage State Park and the Veterans Memorial Bridge will be shut down for good.
The expressway will be demolished as part of the overall project of creating a boulevard that will better connect downtown with the waterfront.
Mayor Paul Coogan tells us local traffic will still be accessible north and south along Davol Street on either side of the expressway. He recommends those who pass through the city on the expressway seek an alternate route.
Also, the u-turn bridge at Brightman Street will be permanently closed. It will be replaced with a u-turn from Davol Street northbound to southbound, located at the existing Cory Street underpass/ u-turn.
With construction work taking place over the next three years, the mayor says plans are being put in place to minimize the impact on events held at the waterfront this summer.
