Former Somerset Police Chief Joseph Ferreira is seeking his fourth two-year term as a member of the Governor’s Council at the November 3rd State Election. He is running unopposed.
Watch ou complete interview with Mr. Ferreira.
Mr. Ferreira was first elected as a Governor’s Councilor in 2014. His district encompasses 47 communities; running from the Rhode Island border to the west heading east to Cape Cod and the Islands. He and the other seven councilors are charged with approving all gubernatorial appointments such as judges and clerk-magistrates. The council is also in charge of granting pardons and commutations. Mr. Ferreira says his service as a police officer, and now a lawyer, makes him qualified to vote on judicial appointments.
Mr. Ferreira says unlike the appointment of judges on the federal level, the appointment of judges in Massachusetts, including to the State Supreme Judicial Court, is not blinded by political partisanship.
