Fall River will soon have a new fire chief.
The city council this week unanimously approved Mayor Paul Coogan’s selection of current District Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon to ascend to the job when current Chief Roger St. Martin retires next month.
Chief Bacon grew up in the Flint and currently lives in Somerset. He rose through the ranks during his 20 years in the department, beginning as a firefighter, a lieutenant, and the last ten years as district chief. He comes into the job looking to provide stability within the department.
Chief Bacon says he looks to take the first six months of his tenure to meet with every member of the department and understand the processes of administration. He also wants to build upon the stellar reputation of what he calls one of the best fire departments in the region.
The chief says COVID restricted the department’s ability to be an active member within the community. He looks to change that.
Other short-term goals for the chief include getting the force to its full complement of 195 firefighters and keeping the apparatus up to date.
He says his family has been extremely supportive of his career arc with 14-year-old son Jack potentially interested in following in his father’s footsteps
During our weekly interview with Mayor Paul Coogan, he says he’s excited about Chief Bacon’s qualifications and enthusiasm for the job.
