Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey this week unveiled her first state budget. The spending plan is tabbed at $55.5 billion and comes at a time when the Commonwealth is in sound financial shape.
The governor’s proposed budget includes huge spending increases for education and other local aid. Fall River is slated to receive $20 million more next year with just about all of it earmarked for the school department. Mayor Paul Coogan says more money for education is welcomed, but it comes with an increased financial commitment from the city’s general budget to meet the state’s required minimum amount of education spending.
