The Fall River School Committee this week voted to make changes to school superintendent Matthew Malone’s contract following allegations he exhibited inappropriate behavior to school department staff. Mayor Paul Coogan, chair of the committee, recused himself from the issue.
Mayor Coogan came to the decision after asking for and receiving, an opinion from the state Ethics Commission on Superintendent Malone’s role as direct supervisor to a member of the mayor’s family.
The mayor says the superintendent’s contract is slated to expire in approximately 18 months. He is unsure how the school committee will respond when the time comes to renegotiate the superintendent’s contract.
By a vote of 4-2, the school committee voted to amend Dr. Malone’s contract, altering his compensation package and adding language allowing him to be terminated without cause under “certain circumstances”.
