Many local residents who have been negatively impacted by COVID-19 have sought support in accessing food to feed their families. Local farmers have been part of the solution, providing healthy options that are covered by government assistance.
The Southeastern Massachusetts Agriculture Partnership (SEMAP) works with area farmers to preserve and expand access to locally grown healthy food. SEMAP Executive Director Karen Schwalbe says the organization has worked to expand the coordination of local farmer’s markets within Fall River.
SEMAP currently organizes three farmer’s markets in Fall River, all of which will run at least until the end of October:
- Doolan Apartments, 34 Mitchell Dr., Tuesdays, 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
- Fall River HealthFirst Family Center, 387 Quarry St., Wednesdays, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
- Cardinal Medeiros Towers, 1197 Robeson St., Fridays, 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
In a time when many people are in need of support to purchase food due to the impacts of COVID-19, programs are in place to use government assistance benefits to purchase local fruits and vegetables.
