Nearly 100 companies took part last Friday in a job fair hosted by the One SouthCoast Chamber at White’s of Westport. Many of them are still looking to fill multiple vacant positions.
Chamber co-CEO Rick Kidder says many of the pandemic-related vacancies have been filled and even though the unemployment rate is at a level of where it was prior to COVID, people are still looking for work and companies have openings.
Kidder says the local hospitality industry continues to exhibit one of the highest needs for help.
The companies at the job fair had opportunities to meet a wide breadth of experience. Jason Bourne of Gold Medal Bakery says his company traditionally has high turnover and he has jobs available on the production line and in shipping.
Local social service agency Steppingstone, Inc. is also looking to fill jobs to meet its mission of serving the community.
Even though inflation has made it hard for people to make ends meet and there is the fear of a recession next year, co-CEO MIahcel O’Sullivan feels the region is prepared to weather any downturn in the economy.
