During our live coverage of the verdict in the trial of former Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia, local attorney Steven Sabra said the abundance of evidence and the prosecution’s methodical presentation proved to be the deciding factors in the jury finding Correia guilty of 21 of the 24 counts faced during his federal trial.
Correia was convicted of defrauding investors and filing false tax returns in the operation of his SnoOwl app company and extorting thousands of dollars from potential local marijuana vendors in exchange for letters of non-opposition needed to secure a state license.
Attorney Sabra said his biggest criticism of the prosecution was not proving the allegations of bribery against Correia in seeking half the salary of former chief of staff and co-conspirator Genoveva Andrade.
Correia is scheduled to be sentenced on September 20. The maximum jail time Correia can receive for his convictions is 20 years. Sabra believes there is every likelihood Correia will not spend that amount of time behind bars.
