The candidates for mayor seem to disagree on the financial health of the City of Fall River.
Last week challenger City Council President Cliff Ponte charged that the city will face a budget deficit of $3.2 million this year, and upwards of over $6 million next year, due in part to the city miscalculating the amount of federal COVID American Rescue Plan Act funds it could use to recoup lost revenue due to the pandemic. He says to close the gap, Mayor Paul Coogan has limited options.
Mayor Coogan disagrees with Councilor Ponte’s assessment, saying the city will be able to use the federal money and is set to deal with shortfalls next year.
Councilor Ponte is calling on the mayor to provide details, before the election, on how the administration plans to close the budget gap. He says if elected, he will keep a close eye on city expenditures.
Mayor Coogan says Councilor Ponte’s campaign claims are misleading
