The services of Steppingstone, Inc.’s First Step Inn homeless shelter remain vital for individuals who do not have a reliable place to live.
Director of Homeless Services Rosa Medeiros says the shelter has increased its capacity to 30 beds year-round and 50 beds during the winter months. The organization’s connection with the homeless population tends to wane during the warmer months of the year.
Ms. Medeiros says along with behavioral factors, economics also plays a role.
The organization is sponsoring its annual Get Steppin’ 5k Walk this weekend with the goal of raising more than $100,000 for the homeless shelter.
Along with raising funds for the First Step Inn, the walk also brings increased awareness to the problem of homelessness in Fall River and removes the stigma that comes along with it.
Over 90 percent of the funds raised at the walk are dedicated to services provided by the First Step Inn. Registration is available online and walk-ups are welcomed.
