The next phase of connecting the city with the waterfront symbolically got underway today with a groundbreaking ceremony launching the reconstruction of Rte. 79.
Decades in the making, the project will eventually lower the highway and create a boulevard from the Veterans Memorial Bridge to the north to the Braga Bridge to the south. Mayor Paul Coogan says the project is the culmination of plans to revitalize Fall River’s waterfront.
Lt. Governor Karyn Polito says reconstructing Rte. 79 was a priority for the city during her and Governor Charlie Baker’s eight years in office and she is proud to have worked with the city and legislative leaders to make the project a reality.
Sixth Bristol State Representative Carole Fiola says when the Rte. 79 project is complete, it will bring to an end over 20 years of work to reconnect the waterfront with the rest of the city.
