Members of the Fall River Fire Department yesterday took part in specialized training simulating an emergency situation that could take place when SouthCoast Rail becomes a reality.
The drill was organized with fire departments in Freetown, Lakeville, Berkley and Rochester.
SouthCoast Rail Project Manager Jean Fox says the drill ran smoothly.
Chief St. Martin says the department will need to strategize on how to best navigate rail emergencies along the city’s tracks.
This drill was just one of what will be ongoing training exercises for local fire departments when it comes to emergencies along SouthCoast Rail. Captain Michael O’Reagan says as time progresses the department will identify deficiencies in service and equipment.
Ms. Fox says construction continues on the New Bedford leg of SouthCoast Rail. City residents here will continue to see testing along local tracks in the coming months.
Ms. Fox says the hope remains for commuters to start traveling on trains by the end of the year.
