Fall River School Superintendent Maria Pontes yesterday provided the school committee with a first look at how the district fared in this spring’s Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) testing for grades three through eight and grade ten.
Across the Commonwealth, test scores are significantly down from where they were prior to the pandemic, with Fall River and other urban districts faring the worst.
In just about every grade level, scores for the English Language Arts (ELA), Math and Science in Fall River were below those of other urban districts across the state. The biggest decreases were seen within grades three through five, where students lost in-person instruction in what are considered to be their formative learning years. Another big factor in the decline is the increased rate of absenteeism of students across the district.
Superintendent Pontes shared with the committee some of the positive and negative results of individual schools in Fall River.
Parents can expect to receive individual student MCAS results in the near future.
