The state legislature last week passed a $46 billion FY 2021 state budget. The delayed spending plan reflects impacts caused by COVID-19 but still provides sustained funding for the City of Fall River.
State Senator Michael Rodrigues, who serves as chair of the Senate Ways and means Committee, says the state budget does not rely on any broad-based tax increases and, in general, level funds many state services. Because of his role in Senate leadership, he says communities like Fall River have been able to benefit despite limitations caused by the pandemic.
Governor Baker still needs to approve the budget or issue any line-item vetoes. The legislature will begin work next week on the FY 2022 budget, which many say may be more difficult to construct than this year. Senator Rodrigues hopes next year’s spending plan will be in place before the new fiscal year begins on July 1.
