A new Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School is now a certainty following the unanimous vote this week by town meeting members in Swansea to pay its portion of the $293 million price tag for the new school on Stonehaven Road.
At the meeting, Swansea Selectman Steven Kitchin said Diman graduates make an impact in the community every day, and investing in a new school makes good fiscal sense.
Diman Superintendent Director Dr. Elvio Ferreira says he is grateful for the support the communities of Fall River, Somerset, Swansea and Westport have shown in backing the project.
Now that the project has the backing of the four communities, the focus can now shift to finalizing the design and beginning construction.
Dr. Ferreira says the new school will play a big role in educating students to fill job vacancies in construction and other trades.
Even though the state is contributing over $140 million toward constructing a new Diman, the City of Fall River will be asked to pay upwards of $6.5 million a year for 30 years for its share of the cost of the new school construction.
