Statistics released by the Fall River Police Department show crime in the city is down from January through the first week of September compared to the same time frame a year ago.
Police Chief Jeffrey Cardoza says incidents within many major crime categories, except for one, are lower than 2019.
The city saw the biggest decreases in robbery (-30.59%), rape (-24.32%), burglary (-22.90%), and larceny (-16.03%). Aggravated assault (-10.63%), including domestic-related assaults (-14.60%), are also lower as is motor vehicle theft (-.78%). The chief says home confinement due to COVID-19 may be a factor in the lower numbers. He says cities of similar size across the Commonwealth have also seen a decrease in crime.
Another area where crime is on the rise through the first eight months is incidents of shots fired. The 18 reports to date is 80% higher than in 2019. Chief Cardoza says the department has made changes in dealing with gun violence since a rash of shootings occurred during the early weeks of summer.
