As the weather improves local baseball and softball leagues will soon resume activity at parks across the city. The Fall River City Council yesterday, at its finance committee meeting, held a hearing looking at changing city policy that asks leagues to cover the cost of electricity for park lighting.
The change took place over ten years ago when the city cut funds for lighting during the Great Recession. Councilor Christopher Peckham believes now is the time for the city’s park department to return to paying the cost of lighting city ball fields.
The Maplewood Independent Youth Baseball League pays for turning on the lights at Maplewood Park at a cost of approximately $6,000 a year. Secretary Sean Tarvis says he feels the city can work with leagues to pay the cost of lighting.
Mr. Travis says his league has been able to offset the cost of electricity by selling ads displayed on fencing around the ball fields. He has an added concern over the city’s lack of maintenance at all parks.
Also at the meeting, the Coogan Administration gave a presentation documenting over $9 million in park improvements over the last ten years.
