On Monday former Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia will learn what his sentence will be on his conviction on 21 federal charges of fraud and extortion.
Both the prosecution and defense this week laid out their recommendations this week for a sentence to be considered by U.S. District Court Judge Douglas Woodlock.
Attorney Steven Sabra says the first step to Monday’s sentencing may be deciding on a motion by Correia to throw out the convictions.
Sabra says regardless of the sentence, it is unlikely the former mayor will leave the courtroom in handcuffs.
Both the prosecution and defense supplied the judge with letters from victims and Correia associates in support of their positions. Sabra says it’s possible some of those individuals may be allowed to speak in court next week. When it comes to Correia addressing Judge Woodlock, his lack of remorse throughout and after the trial will likely keep him on the sidelines.
The sentencing hearing is set for Monday at 11:00 am.
